Andrew Selby – Commonwealth Games preview

Andrew Selby – Commonwealth Games preview

Name: Andrew Selby. Weight: Flyweight (52KG). Club: St Joseph’s Newport / Splott. Prediction: Gold. Andrew Selby’s preview is the easiest of all to summarise, the Barry boy is without doubt Wales’ most likely boxer to win a medal. It’s that simple. With six major tournament medals on his curriculum vitae, Selby is Britain’s most successful amateur boxer ever with two gold and two bronze European Championships medals, plus a World Championships silver and bronze. Even at 24-years-old, it’s safe to say that Selby’s achievements mean he is already a living Welsh boxing legend as his achievements are unrivalled. Add to the pot a burning desire to right a wrong and it’s difficult not to be convinced by Selby’s potential. There haven’t been many disappointments in Selby’s career but a close and controversial points defeat to Haroon Khan at the last Commonwealth Games in India is something he struggled to accept. Now the Welshman has the opportunity to make the headlines at the Commonwealth Games for the right reasons. Four years since disappointment in Delhi, Selby’s has surpassed his already high standards and it would be no surprise to see the 24-year-old annex a gold medal for his crazy collection. Too often, opponents and observers are deceived by Selby’s emotionless expression, only to be dumbstruck when he produces a magical masterclass. Expect more of that in Glasgow.
