Ashley Brace storms to win against former world champion

Last night, Ebbw Vale’s Ashley Brace (5-0, 2KO) made a significant statement by dominating the much more experience Galina Koleva Ivanova (16-13-4, 2KO).

The bantamweight, Wales’ only professional female boxer, stormed to a comprehensive 60-55 decision win at the Rhondda Fach Sports Centre.

Brace was buzzing from the start and though Ivanova tried to match her punch-for-punch, it was the Welshwoman who was more accurate amidst the frenzied action on the Sanigar Events show.

Ivanova has been a professional for 17 years, compared to Brace who made her debut less than a year ago. In that time, the Bulgarian has collected European and WBA world titles but at 38-year-old, it was an effort to match Brace’s non-stop advances.

Brace wasn’t just throwing more or relying on work rate to bank the rounds, she was also quicker to the punch and speedier with her second phase. The action was occasionally untidy up close though, with both guilty of rabbit punching.

25-year-old Brace would also regularly switch between stances without hesitation, keeping Ivanova off balance and wary. It helped Brace evade Ivanova’s replies, also unveiling angles for punches that the veteran couldn’t see coming.

Sensing she was well behind, Ivanova came flying out of the traps in the final round. She pushed Brace to the outskirts of the ring but couldn’t make it count, struggling to find the target with her wide swings.

By this point, Brace was aware of her position and smart enough to stay out of trouble, celebrating with her training team from St Joseph’s Boxing Club at the sound of the final bell.
