Borg to return with shot at world rated O’Kane

Cardiff’s Frankie Borg (9-3, 3KO) will take on his biggest challenge yet when he faces the world rated Eamonn O’Kane (12-1-1, 4KO). The middleweights will meet on Friday 13 February at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon on KM Promotions’ ‘The World Awaits’ show. O’Kane, from Dungiven in Northern Ireland, currently holds the IBF Inter-Continental and WBC Silver International titles but neither belt will be on the line in his 10 rounder with Borg. The fight will be O’Kane’s first since his full time link up with Paddy Fitzpatrick, the trainer of two time super-middleweight world title challenger George Groves. In Borg’s last contest, the Welsh Area champion slipped up in a non-title fight against Swansea’s Chris Ware, visiting the canvas twice on route to a four round decision loss in November. The 34-year-old Welshman has suffered defeat twice before, stoppages against Danny Butler and Chris Eubank Jnr. However, Borg bounced back on both occasions with career best wins in bruising affairs, stopping Gary Cooper in six rounds to win the Welsh Area title and out-pointing Kerry Hope to defend it. As an amateur, O’Kane won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India. Soon after, O’Kane turned professional in Cardiff and stopped Dmitrij Kalinovskij in the first round, while Borg competed in his fourth fight and knocked out Costas Osben in two rounds on the same show. After winning a Prizefighter tournament and the Irish title, O’Kane’s progress was interrupted when he lost a British title eliminator against John Ryder by stoppage. The Irishman regrouped and scored the best win of his career when he out-pointed Merthyr Tydfil’s Kerry Hope over 12 rounds, courtesy of a Unanimous Decision. However, O’Kane almost blew it in his last fight when he was dropped by Virgilijus Stapulionis before an accidental head clash ruled their fight a Technical Draw. Tickets are priced at £35.
