In the first EUBC tournament after the London Olympics, Aaron Bird was the standout in a four man Welsh Youth team at the Brandenburg Cup last week as the Bonymaen middleweight secured a bronze medal. Bird was eventually defeated by Poland’s Arkadiusz Szwedowicz by the narrow score line of 13:11. Earlier in the competition Bird registered wins over Russia’s Magomed Madiev (17:12) and Hungary’s Bence Nagy (10:9). The Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt, Germany is a qualifier for the World Youth Championships in October. It was a story of very fine lines that saw the three other Welsh entries be eliminated; Flyweight Jamie Viscount (Colcot) lost 16:15 to Russia’s Nikita Kuznetsov. Light-welterweight Ricky Rowlands (Jones Gym) lost 14:12 to Germany’s Marcel Orsinger. Heavyweight Kody Davies (Lions Den) lost on countback after originally drawing 15:15 with Germany’s entry. The next qualifier for October’s World Youth Championships is the Ahmet Comert in Istanbul, Turkey at the start of September.
