CLEV COMEBACK RESET

Wales’ 11th world champion, Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12KO) will start his cruiserweight quest on February 8th. This afternoon at a press conference in London, Frank Warren Promotions announced that the fight will take place at the Copper Box Arena with Dereck Chisora and Billy Joe Saunders co-headlining. Cleverly, 26, was due to make his comeback on November 30th in a challenge for the vacant Commonwealth championship against Australia’s Daniel Ammann. However, a back injury interrupted training and forced the Welshman to delay his comeback and the bout has been rescheduled for the February 8th date. He said, “I got injured in training doing dead-lifts, I had a back spasm but ultimately, I’ve got time on my side. I’m still 26, so it’s important that I fight when I’m 100%, mentally and physically ready to make a fresh assault on the cruiserweight division. “I’ve got room to strengthen in to the weight and next year, I’m sure I will do and I’ll be a full blown cruiserweight.” “When I’m sparring and closer to cruiserweight, I feel awesome. When I get down to light-heavyweight, I start losing that snap and it was something I knew I was gonig to have to do. It was inevitable but while I was world champion at light-heavyweight, I just kept on winning and kept on defending my title and making the weight. Now, that reign came to an end and it’s time we move onwards to the right weight division for me now.” The Gwent native hasn’t fought since August when he lost his WBO world light-heavyweight title in a fourth round stoppage loss to Russian banger Sergey Kovalev which handed him the first defeat of his professional career. Should Cleverly recapture a world title then he’ll be the only Welshman to lose a world title and regain another. No Welshman has technically become a two weight world champion either. When Joe Calzaghe moved from super-middleweight to light-heavyweight in the closing chapter of his career, he contested for the RING magazine’s title. Although prestigious, the RING’s title isn’t governed or sanctioned by one of the four main organisations. Cleverly said, “”I’m in boxing and I’m in this sport to be world champion. I promised myself, I’m back and I’m back to get that world title. I’ve always delivered on my promises in my life and this will be the same. Frank can deliver the world title shot for me and I’ll grab it with both hands, for sure.” Warren said, “The cruiserweight division will be very good for him. I feel he’ll make himself a force to be reckoned with very quickly in this division and he’s starting off straight away in his first fight (at the weight) for the Commonwealth title against Daniel Ammann. “If he comes through that one, he’ll be moving very quickly to get himself in to a position where he will fight for the cruiserweight (world) title next year. I will definitely deliver him the opportunity to fight for the cruiserweight championship of the world.”
