ENZO MAC BOUNCES BACK

There was some Welsh championship success for Wales at the Motorpoint Arena on August 17th as Swansea’s Enzo Maccarinelli (37-6, 29KO) rejuvenated his career with an eleventh round knockout victory over Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Ovill McKenzie (21-12, 10KO) in a back-and-forth Fight of the Night encounter. In a rematch of their original clash which McKenzie (12st 6lbs) won with a hugely premature second round stoppage, Maccarinelli (12st 6lbs 8oz) was forced to exercise and overcome ghosts that will haunt him no more. Going in to the bout, Maccarinelli appeared to be one defeat from retirement while McKenzie admitted that he didn’t expect to be given a fair shake on the scorecards. The ending came as Maccarinelli landed a huge left uppercut that rendered McKenzie unconscious while still standing, forcing referee Phil Edwards to intervene. By that point, both boxers were exhausted as they had taken and given their best to each other. The opening four rounds were even as both kept up with each other, McKenzie came on the stronger in the middle rounds but it was the Swansea 33-year-old who found a second wind to score a stoppage win in a scorcher that sent the arena in to celebration. Although in different divisions, Macarinelli has become just the third Welshman in history to win British, Commonwealth, European and world titles. Other results: Middleweight Liam Williams (8-0, 3KO) beat Darren Codona on points, 80-72. Welterweight Lewis Rees (8-0, 5KO) beat Dee Mitchell on points, 80-72. Lightweight Craig Evans (10-0, 3KO) beat Youssef Al Hamidi on points, 80-73. Light-welterweight Rhys Evans (1-0) beat Matt Seawright on points, 40-36. Light-middleweight Aled Cook (1-0) beat Keiron Grey on points, 40-36. Cruiserweight Danni Griffiths (0-1) lost to Courtney Richards on points, 38-39.
