EXCL: BBBoC Welsh Area Council to host first ever awards ceremony

The British Boxing Board of Control’s [BBBoC] Welsh Area Council will host their first ever awards ceremony.

The event will be held on Saturday 21 February 2016 and hosted at the Swalec Stadium in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The organisation of the night is in its infancy but it will be set up for approximately 160 people and hosted by the popular Rhondda Master of Ceremonies, Ricky Wright.

Jeff Williams, the Welsh Area Council member who has taken the lead on the event, said: “It’s unprecedented. Basically, what we’re going to try and do is mirror what happens up and down the country.

“We know we have the British Boxing Board of Control main awards in London but the Midlands Area and Southern Area have done this for a while. It’s always a great occasion and we thought, we’ll give it a crank on the handle as well.”

The date of the event will be the day after the 106th anniversary of Jim Driscoll’s historic world title challenge, when the legendary Welshman tackled the odds against featherweight champion Abe Attell in New York City.

If the event is successful then it will be held on an annual basis. A sub-committee will be set up to decide on what the award categories are, the nominees and subsequent winners.

Williams said: “We aim to have something like five or six awards, such as; Best Boxer, Best Fight, Best Newcomer and Contribution to Boxing. There may be a surprise award, too. For example, if we’ve got someone who has done many years in the sport, we’ll give them an award for their endeavors.”

Tickets will cost £50 and it will include a three-course meal. The organisers have set up a website with a simple online payment method.
