Hearn: Brunker is perfect for Selby

Matchroom Sport’s Eddie Hearn believes that Australia’s Joel Brunker (27-0, 15KO) is the perfect fight to unleash Barry Town’s Lee Selby (19-1, 7KO) on to the world scene. The Welsh featherweight looked to be progressing towards the WBC world title held by Mexico’s Jhonny Gonzalez, having beaten the champion’s countryman Romulo Koasicha in an eliminator in May. However, Selby’s handlers changed direction and he will now meet Brunker at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday in a final eliminator for Evgeny Gradovich’s IBF world title. Explaining the decision, Hearn said, “I’ve been involved in a lot of IBF final eliminators and I’m not saying that the WBC doesn’t move you as quickly when you become mandatory, but I just know with the IBF that we’re going to get exactly what we want and the timings we want as well. “I looked at the WBC rankings, I looked at [Jayson] Velez and the boxers in the rankings and a final eliminator wasn’t available. Then, we were offered the Brunker fight as a final eliminator [for the IBF title] and I’ve always looked at Brunker and thought, ‘this is a perfect fight for Lee Selby.’ Since signing with Hearn 18 months ago, Selby has become a regular on Sky Sports, winning all five of his fights and positioning himself as a leading contender to challenge the current champions. To enter a new chapter on to the global scene with Hearn, 27-year-old Selby must overcome a rough, uncompromising and aggressive visitor – all of which are traits that suggest Brunker won’t be affected by travelling to the other side of the world. Hearn said, “It’s almost like a coming out fight on to the world scene, I mean the style is perfect for him [Selby]. Brunker’s 27-0, a really good fighter, stylist and a good looking kid. I think he’s 100% the best fighter Selby’s fought before. “He [Brunker] is a pressure fighter, I watched him in Atlantic City, he loves to be exciting. Selby’s not going to have to go looking for him, I think he can stand and trade with him and make him look silly, I think he’ll have a more spiteful performance.” That sort of ‘spiteful’ performance is something some fight fans have been calling to see from Selby for a little while. The St Joseph Boxing Club trained boxer broke out on to the British scene with a series of destructive performances in 2011, raising expectations to high levels and Hearn has made the Welshman aware of it. Hearn said, “I said to him after the last fight [UD12 win over Koasicha in May], ‘it’s all very well going out there and doing nice pitter-patter-pitter-patter punches and moving but people want to see action.’ People liked him against Martin Lindsay [UD12 win] because he was devastating and now he’s got to do the same against Brunker. “Against Rendall Munroe [R6TKO in February], Selby kind of knew what he was up against and against the next guy [Koasicha], he really knew he was better. Ultimately, I think Brunker’s the perfect fight, name wise and style wise, for Selby to make a statement and he’s got to make a statement.” Tickets to ‘Moment of Truth’ are priced at £40, £60 and £100.
