Jake Anthony extends winning streak to six

Ammanford’s Jake Anthony (6-0) extended his unbeaten streak to six straight wins with a controlled 39-37 decision win against Derby’s Nathan Junor (0-2) on Sanigar Events’ show at the Rhydycar Leisure Centre in Merthyr Tydfil.

The middleweight had been due to face the unorthodox Manchester-based Yailton Neves, only for the opponent to be switched to the much bigger Junor, who weighed in as a cruiserweight, at late notice.

Anthony, managed by Richie Garner, was still the aggressor for the most part. He stepped in with meaty straight shots in the opener and when the distance shortened, sometimes with his back against the ropes, he turned Junor to reset the range.

The 20-year-old introduced his favoured punches in the second round – meaty body shots with both hands, a tactic that has become his trademark since turning professional 18 months ago.

There was more distance between the duo in the third round. Anthony attempted feinting to make openings and Junor tried to stick and move. It was the slowest round of the contest, which can be forgiven amidst the sweltering heat.

Junor appeared understandably tired in the fourth round, cleverly trying to tie Anthony’s leavers in knots. However, the Welshman broke free and flurried, mixing in harder power punches in-between. Anthony didn’t seem to notice he picked up a minor cut near his left ear as he closed out the contest in his typically controlled manner.
