Jenkins’ British title shot rescheduled

The biggest fight of Chris Jenkins’ (16-0, 8KO) career is back on track after another rescheduled date has been agreed and announced. The 26-year-old light-welterweight will challenge for the vacant British title against Tyrone Nurse (31-2, 6KO) on 18 July at the Manchester Arena. Jenkins, aptly nicknamed ‘Rock n Rolla’ by his manager Paul Boyce, was due to contest the title in April but his dream was derailed in a chaotic week of events. It started with Willie Limmond withdrawing a week before the fight and vacating his Lord Lonsdale belt due to a shoulder injury. Then Nurse, who was due to box in an eight rounder on the same show, stepped in as a late notice replacement. However, there was still one more twist in store when Jenkins collapsed in the gym and in front of a British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) official. The Welshman was hospitalised but discharged himself days later. Nurse still boxed on the Matchroom Sport show at the First Direct Arena in Leeds and widely out-pointed the previously undefeated Lewis Taylor in a non-title fight. A rescheduled bout between the Yorkshireman and Jenkins was always likely as they still held a valid contract and bout agreement. In the headline contest, Bury’s super-bantamweight Scott Quigg will defend his WBA Regular world title against former IBF world champion Kiko Martinez. The night has another Swansea connection as Martinez often trains at a gym owned by West Wales’ Robert Harry in Torrevieja, South East Spain – the same place where Cefn Fforest’s Nathan Cleverly has spent part of his preparation for his comeback on 30 May. Anthony Crolla, who edged out Wales’ former world champion Gavin Rees in 2013, will appear in the Chief Support contest as he challenges Darleys Perez for the WBA world lightweight title.
