Joe Cordina – Commonwealth Games preview

Name: Joe Cordina. Weight: Lightweight (60KG). Club: St Joseph’s Newport. Prediction: Silver. Joe Cordina, the unorthodox St Joseph’s Boxing Club pugilist, was in the form of his life… all until he received a Technical Knockout defeat to David Gauthier while on a trip to Canada in May. The lightweight was dropped for the first time ever in one of the most surprising results the Welsh amateur boxing scene has seen for some time. Until then, Cordina was excelling. The switch hitter had won the Welsh Senior Championships with relative ease, shining with points wins over Monty Lee and Nico Morrison. Following that, Cordina looked unstoppable as he then took gold at the Gee Bee tournament in Finland with a Unanimous Decision win over New Zealand’s Chad Milnes. Irrelevant of the stoppage defeat in his last contest, the classy Cordina remains one of Wales’ best hopes of a medal and he is expected to reach the semi-final stages, at the least. The cliche says that form is temporary and class in permanent. So, should Cordina recover from any mental demons suffered in his last fight, then the saying will be proved true. Cordina has benefitted from a place on the Team GB Podium Squad which has allowed him to live in Sheffield five days a week and train under Robert McCracken. The aptly nicknamed ‘Welsh Wizard’ has established himself as British amateur boxing’s best lightweight and his ascendancy has been aided by Scottish and English rivals, Josh Taylor and Sam Maxwell respectively, moving to light-welterweight.
