Jones having ‘excellent’ camp ahead of two-time Welsh champion bid

Ferndale’s Barrie Jones (20-10, 7KO) says he’s given himself the best chance of becoming a two-time Welsh Area champion in nine days time with an ‘excellent’ training camp. The 30-year-old challenges light-middleweight champion Jerome Samuels (5-5, 1KO) on Sanigar Events’ ‘Unfinished Business’ show at the Newport Centre for the belt he once owned in 2011. Jones said: “Preparation has been excellent. I’ve had some good sparring [with Chris Jenkins, Tony Dixon and Morgan Jones] and training has gone as well as I could hope for, to be honest. “I’ve had about six weeks to prepare, I’m not used to having that much notice. I’ve got a week and a bit left, there’s nothing too hard left to do and we’ll just wind down in the last few days.” The southpaw has fought in four Welsh Area title fights across four weight categories, winning only one of those – a wide points decision over Bargoed’s Gary Cooper at 11st [154lbs], where he believes his body is best suited. Jones said: “I’ve been up and down the weight divisions before but I can do light-middleweight comfortable. I feel strong at this weight, so I’m glad the weight hasn’t been an issue for me in training. “I was 11st 1lb on the day of my comeback fight [a four round points victory against Marcus Le Doux in October], so it’s no problem for me. I could do welterweight too if the right fight come up but I’m most comfortable here at light-middleweight.” There’s not many styles Jones hasn’t seen in his 30 bout career, including a controversial points loss to former world champion Souleymane M’baye in 2008, but he’s not sure what to expect from Samuels, who he admits having never watched Jones said: “I’ve never really seen him [Samuels] box but I know he’s tall and rangy, so it might be awkward. I don’t know what type of fight to expect, it depends how it happens on the night. I’ve got to go take it to him, I know that much. “It’s only my second fight back and I’ve got a good opportunity of a championship fight. I’m happy to have the chance to put myself back up there.”
