Jones out of Davies title challenge but Lane steps in to fight

Friday’s Welsh title fight between Merthyr Tydfil’s Dai ‘Dutters’ Davies (11-23-2, 2KO) and Ferndale’s Kris ‘Chuck’ Jones (4-14-2) is off. Jones, who hasn’t fought at featherweight since 2011, has been suffering from flu and is unable to recover in time for the ‘Dragon Fire’ show at the Rhydycar Leisure Centre. However, Sanigar Events have organised a replacement opponent for Davies who will still appear on the show, live on Eurosport (Sky Ch 410). The 31-year-old will now fight Bristol’s Ashley Lane (5-4-2, 1KO) over 10 rounds for the International Masters title. Davies is in his third reign as Welsh champion and he was due to make his second defence, having stopped Robbie Turley in July. The Merthyr man’s momentum will now have been disrupted and it’s unknown what effect it will have on his British title ambitions, having been lined up for an eliminator if he overcame Jones. Lane, a natural bantamweight, has fought once this year when he beat Anwar Alfadi on points in March. The rest of the show remains unaffected with the standout contest being Cardiff’s Craig Kennedy’s (9-0, 5KO) eight rounder with former Prizefighter cruiserweight champion, Wadi Camacho (12-3, 8KO). On the undercard, Morgan Jones debuts against Jimmy White (0-2) and Chris Jenkins (15-0 7KO), Darren Morgan (7-5, 5KO), Chris Ware (4-0, 2KO), Barrie Jones (19-10, 7KO) and Danni Griffiths (4-1) all appear. Tickets are priced at £30 for unreserved seating, £50 for ringside seating and £65 for VIP table seating. For tickets call the Sanigar Events Box Office on 0117 949 6699. Doors open at 6:00pm and the first bell will sound at 6.30pm.
