Kennedy and Brooks to battle for bragging rights

Craig Kennedy (9-0, 5KO) and Wayne Brooks (7-3-2, 4KO) will finally face each other for local bragging rights on October 24th. The Welsh cruiserweight title will also be on the line, subject to approval from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC). The Cardiff cruiserweights will co-headline Sanigar Events’ ‘Dragon Fire’ show at the Rhydycar Leisure Centre in Merthyr Tydfil, live on Eurosport (Sky Ch. 412). Two weeks ago, BoxingWales.com revealed that Sanigar Events had plans to make the fight and it’s now been finalised. The pair were originally due to face each other in December but days before the fight, Brooks withdrew from the contest due to a back injury. Kennedy still fought though, dispatching Iain Jackson inside three rounds and he’s since gone on to record points victories without losing a round over two durable journeymen, Moses Matovu and Remigijus Ziausys. On the other hand, Brooks has been out of the ring since knocking out Olegs Lopajevs in a round ten months ago. The 27-year-old is scheduled to end that inactivity on Saturday when he faces Manchester’s novice professional Sam Hyde (2-0) in a four round fight on Matchroom Sport’s show at the Phones 4U Arena. The Welsh cruiserweight title has been inactive since it’s creation in the 1980’s. However, both times it’s been fought for have resulted in knockouts. In 1999, Darron Griffiths stopped Tim Redman in seven rounds and before that in 1986, Abner Blackstop stopped Les Davies in nine rounds. In the headline contest, hometown hero Dai ‘Dutters’ Davies (11-23-2, 2KO) will defend his Welsh featherweight title against Ferndale’s Kris ‘Chuck’ Jones (4-14-2). The undercard includes the Fight of the Year candidate rematch between Luke Osman and Jimmy White, Barrie Jones, Tony Dixon, Dorian Darch, Jamie Evans, Morgan Jones, Darren Morgan, Danni Griffiths, Chris Ware and Lloyd Davies. Tickets are priced at £30 for unreserved seating, £50 for ringside seating and £65 for VIP table seating. For tickets call the Sanigar Events Box Office on 0117 949 6699. Doors open at 6:00pm and the first bell will sound at 6.30pm.
