Lockett: Hughes has the potential to be a British champion

Maerdy’s Alex ‘Bad News’ Hughes (1-0, 1KO) has the potential to eventually become a British champion, according to his trainer and manager Gary Lockett. The 20-year-old has his second professional fight tonight on Frank Warren’s show in Sheffield in a four rounder against Midlander Jamie Gelder (2-4). Lockett said, “Every fighter in this gym can be British champion at the very least, otherwise they wouldn’t be here. With Alex, he’s just been unlucky over the last few months.” Hughes made an ultra-impressive debut in May, halting the usually the durable Mark Till in four rounds to score his first ever stoppage win, despite having over 50 amateur fights. Since then, the counter-puncher’s patience was tested in another way as he endured seven months out of the ring. Explaining the inactivity, Lockett said, “Alex was supposed to box on the Merthyr bill back in July, he had a bad chest infection and then he was supposed to box in September but broke his thumb in sparring. “I had him on two more bills but they fell through. Lucky enough, Francis Warren has done me a favour and put him on this show on Saturday, so he can get a fight before Christmas.” It’s not the first time Hughes has been forced to spend time on the sidelines but Lockett had no worries about his boxer’s focus fading, with Hughes having proved his dedication in the past. Lockett said, “The kid failed his brain scan two years ago, what did he do? Go eat chocolate and pies for two years? No, he didn’t. He was in the gym, sparring learning and picking things up because we always believed he would get his license. “He improved so much from the time he was supposed to make his debut [in 2012] to when he did eventually make his debut. When he did make his debut, he was a man, whereas before that he was a young man or a boy, lets say.”
