Enzo Maccarinelli is in line to face Ovill McKenzie on the undercard of Nathan Cleverly’s title defence at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on October 27th, according to sources close to both boxers. The pair have history; while he was WBO world cruiserweight champion, Maccarinelli employed McKenzie as a sparring partner and knocked the Jamaican born banger down. Since that Maccarinelli (35-5, 27KO) has lost form and despite British and European honours, many have called on him to retire – having been knocked out heavily four times in the last four years. In his second stint as Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion, notorious Derby based boxer McKenzie (20-11, 9KO) has found his career best form lately, stopping Welshman Jeff Evans and Scouser Tony Dodson in a combined total of just four rounds. Meanwhile, Swansea’s Maccarinelli has faced a more turbulent time – winning his last fight over Shane McPhilbin for the British cruiserweight title amidst a round ending 47 seconds early and suffering two knockdowns. Following the fight Maccarinelli tested positive for the banned substance methylhexaneamine (MHA) and he was banned by UK Anti-Doping for six months until October 18th. Defending himself, Maccarinelli said the use of MHA was an accident as he consumed it from an over-the-counter product.
