Nathan Thorley trades knockdowns on his way to his 11th win

Cardiff’s Nathan Thorley (11-0, 5KO) traded knockdowns with Cameroon’s Emmanuel Mousinga (4-14, 1KO) on his way to an entertaining points victory.

The Welsh light-heavyweight champion collected a 38-36 decision, judged by referee Reece Carter, on the undercard of Matchroom’s #JDNXTGEN show at the Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay.

‘Thunder’ struck as early as the opening round, cracking Moussinga with a trademark right cross that landed high on the side of the head. It left the visitor on the canvas and he took a few seconds to gather his senses. The follow up attack was evaded and Moussinga even managed to land his own right hand, though it didn’t dent or deter Thorley’s aggression.

The 25-year-old owned a noticeable size advantage but Moussinga used it to his advantage in the second round. Staying low, Moussinga uncorked his own right hand to drop Thorley, who had been found guilty of standing too tall with his head too high. This time, it was the home towner’s turn to evade a follow up attack, which initially didn’t look likely but he’d settled by the time the ball rang.

The third and fourth rounds were tense and Thorley returned, more cautiously following the calming instructions of cornerman Chris ‘Monkey Davies, to the front foot. He used his jab to force Moussinga, a late replacement opponent, towards the ropes. The pair would share several more tasty exchanges, which the Welshman often appeared more comfortable with after surviving the earlier scare.
