News Notes: Welsh Senior Championships, Kennedy-Askins date, Dale Evans switches gyms
The date for the Welsh Senior Championships final has been confirmed.
Welsh Boxing, the governing body who run the unpaid code in the country, will host the event on Friday 7 April.
It will take place at the home of Welsh amateur boxing at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
Craig Kennedy’s (16-0, 8KO) fight with Blackpool’s Matty Askin (21-3-1, 13KO) for the vacant British title is set to take place on Saturday 11 March, BoxingWales.com understand.
Cyclone Promotions won the cruiserweight purse bid earlier this month and are planning to stage the show in Kennedy’s home city of Cardiff.
The outfit, who are fronted by Hall of Famer and former world champion Barry McGuigan, already know the territory having held a show at the Cardiff Ice Arena in May 2016.
St Clears’ Dale ‘Big Boy’ Evans (12-3-2, 4KO) has switched camps and joined forces with St Joseph’s Boxing Club.
The 25-year-old welterweight will still be managed by Gary Lockett but will now be trained by Tony Borg in Newport.
Ev ans hasn’t fought since September when he beat Scotland’s Mike Towell, who tragically passed away following a fifth round stoppage defeat. The contest was a British title eliminator and Evans aims to win the Lord Lonsdale strap in tribute to his former opponent.
