No easy draws for Wales at the Commonwealth Games draw

Earlier today, Commonwealth Games officials conducted the tournament draw and as there was no seeding, it meant that any boxer could face any other boxer so there we no easy outcomes for Team Wales’ boxers. Out of the 32 lightweight (60KG) boxers, one medallist favourite will be going home as Cardiff’s Joe Cordina will face fellow Team GB member Pat McCormack of England in the first round on Saturday (July 26th) at 1:00PM. In the second round, the winner of the contest may meet New Zealand’s Chad Milnes, who Cordina beat earlier this year. Wales’ best boxer and the favourite to take the gold amongst the 32 boxers in the flyweight (52KG) division, Andrew Selby will have to overcome his home nations rivals. First up will be Scotland’s Reece McFadden who will be boosted by home crowd support on Friday (July 25th) at 6:35PM. Should the Barry Town boy prevail, he may have to face England’s Charlie Edwards in the second round. Defending Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sean McGoldrick was one of the 32 bantamweight (56KG) boxers to receive a bye but will box Australia’s Jackson Wood in the second round on Monday (July 28th) at 1:35PM. In the third round, the Welshman could come up against India’s Manju Wanniarachchi, the man who originally defeated Newport’s McGoldrick in the Commonwealth Games final four years ago but later failed a drugs test. Team captain Ashley Williams received a bye in the first round but so did his opponent, Mozambique’s Juliano Maquina. The fresh light-flyweights will face off in the afternoon session on Monday (July 28th) at 1:05PM. Another Welshman who will face a home boxer is Blackwood’s heavyweight (91KG) Kody Davies who is scheduled to face Scotland’s Stephen Lavelle in the last 16 on Sunday (July 27th) at 7:50PM. There are 32 boxers in the weight division. Cardiff’s light-heavyweight (81KG) Nathan Thorley has received a bye to the last 16 and he will fight Tonga’s Benjamin Taualii on Sunday (July 27th) at 2:15PM. Pontyberem’s light-welterweight (64KG) Zack Davies will fight Swaziland’s Thabiso Dlamini on Saturday (July 26th) at 6:35PM. There are 32 boxers in the weight division. Bargoed’s middleweight (75KG) Lauren Price will fight Guyana’s Theresa London on Tuesday (July 29th) at 7:40PM and Pembroke’s light-welterweight (60KG) Charlene Jones will fight Sri Lanka’s Hansika Arachchi on Tuesday (July 29th) at 2:00PM, on the other side of the draw to her English rival Natasha Jonas.
