Pontypool Boxing Club put on action packed 13 fight show

By Clarke Joslyn: Last week, Pontypool Boxing Club hosted a well-attended, well matched, keenly contested thirteen fight show at the Trevethin and Penygarn Social Club.

Top of the bill featured Pontypool favourite David Walker in a four round heavyweight (91KG) clash against Trowbridge’s James Raggat. Whilst Raggat was competitive and more than happy to stand and trade with the more experienced Walker, it was always Walker that had the final say in proceedings. An accidental head clash caused a cut to the right eye of Walker in the second round.

A fiery exchange at the start of the fourth, ensured that the final stanza would be as fast paced as the opener. The more accurate work and speed of Walker ensured that he was rightly rewarded a unanimous verdict. The contest was awarded the ‘Contest of the Night’ award and both boxers deserve praise for the frantic, non-stop, action filled bout that they provided.

Josh Keen (Tredegar) and Jake Tinklin (Pantside) shared the ring in a tight 75KG three round contest in which Keen was awarded a split decision. The taller Tinklin made the most of his height and reach advantage by utilising a solid jab. Keen was the busier boxer, opting to use regular swarming flurries on the inside of Tinklin’s reach.

Lewis Brooks (Pontypool) shook off some rust following an 18 month lay-off, but was edged out in a watchable three round bout with Fight Factory’s Max Bailey (65KG). Bailey timed his punches well and was judged the winner by unanimous decision.

Shane Jones (Pontypool) and Jacob Lovell served up a Christmas cracker of a contest their three round 62KG contest. The split decision verdict was awarded to Jones, whose crunching right hand and ring generalship was favoured more than Lovell’s counter punching combinations.

The following bouts were all ‘schoolboy’ category:

Harvey Frisby (Trowbridge) had just a little too much for Jaydon Torrance (Pontypool) in their three round 53KG contest. Each of the rounds were close affairs and Frisby was awarded the victory by split decision.

In the 48KG category James Harris (Heads of Valley) won a unanimous decision against (Trowbridge) trier Micky Cash. The taller Welshman used his reach to good effect. Spirited Cash never gave up and persistently tried to get under the long arms of his opponent and chisel away at Harris, but in this case the Severn Bridge was a bridge too far.

Trowbridge enjoyed more success in the bout between Bradley Smith and Tom Morrision (Cardigan). Both 45KG boxers were technically sound, but it was the slightly busier and harder punching Smith that had his arm raised after three enjoyable rounds.

Alex Harrison (Head of the Valleys) came up short against Owen Heard (Trowbridge). The third and final round proved to be the highlight of the contest, involving a furious exchange which saw both 34KG boxers trade punches.

Dylan Stonehouse (Trowbridge) outpointed Joe Sullivan (Cardigan). The tide turned in favour of the Englishman following a crisp one, two that resulted in a standing count for Sullivan in the second. Sullivan’s jab kept him in the contest.

Kieron James (Pontypool) and Chad Davies (Llanrhmney) didn’t give an inch in their thrilling three rounder. The 30KG contest was fought at a frenetic pace with no quarter given. James was awarded the split decision victory.

Pontypool’s Simey Doherty won a unanimous decision over Scott Baynham (Cardigan) at 44KG. Baynham employed good, straight punches but the busier Doherty had more in his arsenal and was able to catch Baynham with his more fluid punches.

The show opened with two exhibition bouts between Tony Janes (Pontypool) and Mason Turner (Fight Factory) and Pontypools’s Evan James (brother of Kieron), who shared the ring with Jay Pitman (Fight Factory).
