PREVIEW: PACE BACK PUNCHING

Fan favourite Tony Pace (4-5) returns to the ring this weekend in Denmark when he takes on undefeated prospect Anthony Yigit (5-0, 1KO). Nicknamed by BoxingWales as ‘The Welsh Arturo Gatti’, Pace joins fellow Welshman Bradley Pryce on the Sauerland Promotions show at the Kolding-Hallen Indoor Sports Arena in Denmark. The all-action back and forth brawls that 20-year-old Pace is known for has won him a lot of respect and many fans far and wide, especially when he spent his first few fights in the away corner with everything against him. It was that popularity that allowed Pace to appear in the home corner with the accustomed comforts for his last three bouts but he returns to the away corner and he’s more than aware how tough it is there for a fighter with winning intentions. 20-year-old Pace has been out of action since February when he was stopped for the first time in his career by Craig Woodruff in his challenge for the vacant Welsh title. The strain of making the lightweight championship limit, 9st 9lbs, and illness took away Pace’s usual fighting energy and he’s addressed the issue by moving five lbs north to light-welterweight where he expects to be better. Although Pace accepted the bout with Yigit on one week’s notice, he has been keeping busy since July by going around the gym’s and he even stayed sharp by sparring former opponents Woodruff and Francis Luke Robinson. Yigit, a 22-year-old southpaw, has had it relatively easy against straight forward opposition that he should be beating. That’s not to say he can’t beat Pace but the Welshman will be the first opponent Yigit has faced with a genuine expectation of victory himself. For that reason, this has all the ingredients to be a brilliant six round slugfest. In other words, a typical Tony Pace fight. Welcome back, ‘The Snake’…
