REES MEETS COYLE AT CROSSROADS

Gavin Rees (37-3-1, 18KO) faces Tommy Coyle (15-2, 6KO) in a cross roads clash at the Hull Arena on November 2, live on Sky Sports – with tickets on sale at 9am tomorrow morning. 33-year-old Rees is coming off back to back losses and another defeat could spell the end of his illustrious career that has included British, European and world title honours. Like Rees, Coyle is a come forward all action boxer and their styles should gel well to produce a fan friendly fight. The Newbridge native has had an unsuccessful 2013 after a stoppage loss to then WBC world lightweight champion Adrien Broner in February and a close upset points defeat to Manchester’s Anthony Crolla in June. It was in the Crolla fight that Rees suffered an elbow injury that required surgery, keeping the Welshman out for longer than usual. Like in the Crolla fight, Rees is going in to his opponent’s back yard to face a younger challenger in Coyle. In his last fight, Coyle faced his first step up and he was dominating Derry Mathews before a huge left hook from the Liverpudlian turned the fight around to knock Coyle out. Although unsuccessful, Coyle won many plaudits for his efforts and he’ll be looking to regain and maintain his momentum against Rees. Victory for Rees over Coyle could put him in line to face the winner of Mathews and Curtis Woodhouse who meet in Liverpool on September 21st for the Commonwealth title – the only belt missing from Rees’ collection. If Rees was to regroup and win the Commonwealth title then he would be only the fourth Welsh boxer to win all domestic belts and a version of the world title. Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “I’ve been working on a plan to return to Hull since the drive home from the Craven Park show. That was one of the best nights I’ve been a part of and fans can expect more of the same when we return in November.” Tickets are on sale at 9am on Thursday September 12 priced at £30, £40, £60 and £100, with VIP tickets priced at £150 – all tickets are available from Matchroom Sport at www.matchroomboxing.com and on 01277 359900.
