Results round-up: Evans and Harris win in Wolves but Williams beaten

Blackwood’s Craig Evans (14-0, 3KO) showcased his maturity at the Wolverhampton Civic Centre on Saturday to surely put him in position for a long awaited title shot in 2015. The 25 year old handily out-pointed Poland’s Jacek Wylezol (11-6, 6KO) with referee Shaun Messer scoring the contest 80-73 to Evans, despite the Welshman suffering a hand injury. Evans, who spends his time under Tony Borg’s tutelage at St Joseph’s Boxing Club in Newport, was able to display his full array of skill as he spent time throwing singles and combinations on the back and front foot from the southpaw stance. There’s no date confirmed for Evans’ next outing but he revealed in his post-fight interview with BoxNation’s Steve Bunce that he is willing to compete in title fights at both super-featherweight and lightweight. Opening the Frank Warren Promotions show, Swansea’s super-flyweight Jay Harris (5-0, 2KO) scored his second consecutive knockout as he cut down Bulgaria’s Stefan Slavchev with relative ease. The 24 year old, coached by his father Peter and managed by Gary Lockett, put the visitor down in every round and eventually ended it with a body shot after 2:29 minutes of the third round. On Thursday, Ashley Williams’ winless streak in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) continued as he was defeated for the third time in a month. The light-flyweight was beaten by Russia’s Vasili Egorov via Unanimous Decision as the British Lionhearts lost all five fights of the away fixture in Moscow. On Friday, the British Lionhearts travel to South America to take on the reigning champions, Cuba Domadores. Currently in Group A, the British Lionhearts are in third place and Cuba Domadores are leading the group table.
