Results round-up: King, Romaeo, Lilley, Evans

The second Results round-up of the new season comes following a mixed weekend for Welsh boxing with four fighters appearing away from home at locations all across Britain In his sixth fight in nine months, Mountain Ash’s Nathan King (14-25, 1KO) was game but a step behind London’s undefeated Tom Baker (10-0, 2KO). In his typically tough manner, the Welsh super-middleweight pressed the fight and went the six round distance but referee Terry O’Connor scored it in favour of Baker, by a margin of 59-55. Super-featherweight Romeo Romaeo (5-0, 2KO), who used to be based in South Wales, also appeared on the same show at London’s York Hall and he scored his second career knockout, forcing a stoppage in the sixth and final round against Antonio Horvatic (4-8, 3KO). Swansea’s middleweight James Lilley (6-5, 1KO) suffered his second consecutive knockout defeat, losing out to Rick Skelton (10-0, 1KO) at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton, Lancashire. Referee Mark Lyson stopped the contest in the fourth round round of a scheduled six. In November, Leon Findlay stopped Lilley in two rounds and the Welshman was unable to compete for the following ten months due to opponents withdrawing and fights being postponed. Next, 27-year-old Lilley is still scheduled to challenge for the vacant British Masters Bronze light-middleweight title against Daryl Baptist on a Carl Greaves show in Lincoln. Meanwhile in Scotland, Caerphilly’s switch-hitter Robbie Evans (0-1) made a round trip of 800 miles for his professional debut but the bantamweight lost out to Scotland’s talented Scott McCormack (3-0). The two-time Welsh novice champion dropped a 40-36 points decision but has taken pride in his performance and plans to compete in his second contest as soon as possible.
