Robbie Vernon scores another stoppage

Bridgend’s Robbie Vernon (3-0, 2KO) scored an impressive third round stoppage of the awkward debutant Daniel Alder (0-1) on Sanigar Events’ show at the Rhydycar Leisure Centre in Merthyr Tydfil.

The super-lightweight had a task to get his hands on Alder in the opening two rounds. The debutant visitor was unorthodox in almost everything he did, challenging Vernon to measure an unmeasurable range that could drastically shorten or lengthen in a split second.

Alder didn’t always know what was coming next and that unpredictability allowed him to make the exchanges awkward. On the other hand, Vernon kept his shape, stayed balanced and didn’t go searching for the target, which must have been tempting.

The breakthrough came in the third session. Now able to time Alder’s approach with more effectiveness, Vernon’s class came through. He negotiated Alder to the ropes by cutting off the ring and he timed a crisp right cross to the visitor’s jaw.

Alder, who had been backed up to the edges of the ring, hit the canvas hard and didn’t regain all of his senses as he stood up. It gave referee Reece Carter no option but to end proceedings and there were no complaints from the away corner, sparking wild celebrations of Vernon’s vocal fans.
