Selby’s first defence likely to be announced next week

‘Sugar’ Lee Selby (21-1, 8KO) has told that an announcement of his first world title defence is likely to be made next week.

The 28-year-old from Barry Town captured the IBF world featherweight title in May, winning a Technical Decision against Russia’s Evgeny Gradovich (19-1-1, 9KO) at London’s O2 Arena.

Selby, Wales’ 12th ever world champion, is expecting to defend his title in late September, although the opponent and location are not yet finalised. It was originally thought that Selby would fight on 19 September in Cardiff when the new season starts.

However, his promoters Matchroom Sport have made no announcement and the date is less than eight weeks away.

It has been reported by ESPN’s Dan Rafael that former WBC and WBO world bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39KO) was in talks to challenge Selby in the new champion’s first defence.
