Welsh Ex-Boxers annual evening expected to sell-out on Sunday

The Welsh Ex-Boxers Association will host their annual gathering on Sunday, September 7th and it will be held at the Ex-Serviceman’s Club in Taffs Well. Every year, the association award the Howard Winstone Challenge Belt to the best amateur boxer of the year. The Johnny Owen Courage Award and Johnny Owen Carers Award will also be presented by Merthyr Tydfil’s Alan Jones for the third annual year.  Cyril Thomas, Secretary of the Welsh Ex-Boxers Association, said, “I’ve been doing this for a little while, going in to my fourth or fifth year now and I’ve built it to a level where we we’re not going to get many more in that room. We’ve got buses coming down from Brighton, Hastings, Torquay, Plymouth, Leicester, Bournemouth and we hope (former Commonwealth and European champion) Dai Dower will be with them. “It’s really popular, it will be packed here. It’s a great day for the boxing fraternity, the camaraderie is brilliant and I tell the boxers that they’ll never be part of a something like this anywhere else. It’s a fabulous day. “We have associations from all over the place presenting themselves and their chairmen will give speeches. Then we have numerous awards and trophies given out, there’s a buffet too but that never lasts long! We’ve done a lot of presentations for people who think they’ve been forgotten about, it’s just an unbelievable day all round.” The free event starts at 12:00pm and anyone can become a member of the association for an annual fee of £5. There are meetings on the first Tuesday of every month at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Taffs Well which is in the county of Rhondda Cynon Taff, six miles north of the city of Cardiff and accessible from Junction 32 of the M4 motorway or by heading southbound on the A470. Although the association isn’t a registered charity, it helps former fighters who have fallen on hard times with donations and financial support.
