Wilson: I know Cleverly-Bellew is going to be fast and explosive

Darren Wilson remained tight lipped regarding Nathan Cleverly’s (28-1, 14KO) training camp ahead of Saturday’s rematch with Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14KO) but the trainer promised that the Welshman is prepared for victory. Three years ago, Cleverly travelled to Liverpool’s Echo Arena to defeat Bellew and Wilson believes his charge will repeat the feat in five days time. Wilson said, “I know it’s going to be a fast fight, explosive… big shots going in but we’ll have a variety of everything to get the win. Tony has developed as a better fighter since the first fight but so has Nathan. “We’ve adapted our training to what Tony’s been doing in his last few fights but we’ve obviously concentrated on getting the best out of Nathan, that’s been the priority and we will win on Saturday.” In a closed training camp, the pair have been planning for the Bellew rematch for the last 15 weeks and Wilson says they’ve covered everything that’s needed to beat Bellew again. He said, “We’ve done training in certain blocks, blocks of different things so that we cover everything. I’m not saying what we did but we’ve done it in four-week blocks to keep him fresh and make sure he’s strong and explosive throughout the whole camp. It’s all based around our game plan, it’s been enjoyable.” Cleverly has worked with Wilson since his first world title fight in 2011, a fourth round stoppage of Aleksy Kuziemski, but they’ve come closer since Wilson agreed to be the former WBO world champion’s head coach nine months ago. Since then, Cleverly has come back from his sole defeat to Sergey Kovalev in August and returned at cruiserweight, stopping Sean Corbin and Alejandro Emilio Valori. Cleverly ended his cruiserweight fights in a combined six rounds and didn’t give observers much of a chance to really see the effect of the changes he’s made but Wilson insists that his charge is a different proposition in the 200lbs weight category. He said, “You can’t take too many punches off anyone at cruiserweight, especially Tony. Every cruiserweight hits hard and we’ve adapted Nathan’s style to the whole division really. Nathan does a lot of things good and we’ve worked on some other things. He’s better at cruiserweight, the weight suits him.” Wilson was once a promising amateur boxer and aimed to turn professional but was unable due to medical issues. The 30-year-old has since gained a wealth of experience as a coach, training Jamie Arthur and Jason Cook in title fights, plus standout amateur star Daniel Chapman but he’s aware that Saturday is the biggest fight he’s been involved in. He said, “We’re only five days away from a massive night, it’s just a case of ticking over now and waiting for everything we’ve been training for. Today, his training is done and we won’t do anything too hard now. We did the last strength and conditioning yesterday, tomorrow will just be a bit of pad work for our tactics and it’ll be the same on Wednesday. It’s a huge fight and we’re ready for it.” #CleverlyBellew2 will take place at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Saturday 22nd November, live on Sky Sports Box Office (Channel 731) and Sky Sports HD Box Office (Channel 752). The event broadcast will start at 6:00pm and there are repeat viewings on Sunday 23rd November at 9:00am and 4:00pm. Up until Midnight on Friday 21st November, the event is priced at £16.95/€21.95 across all forms of booking.
