Liam Williams forces Ronnie Heffron to submit in breakthrough bout

By Dewi Powell: Last night at the Phones 4U Arena in Manchester, Welsh boxing’s best kept secret, Liam Williams (10-0-1, 5KO) broke though the British boxing scene by forcing Ronnie Heffron to retire on his stool after six rounds.

Williams, who appeared in the away corner and went without mention in the official event programme, didn’t read the script and has put himself further towards a British light-middleweight title shot.

Williams started on fire, staggering Heffron with heavy counterpunches in the opening two rounds but he stayed composed and didn’t look for the early knockout. As it became apparent that Heffron wouldn’t be caught cold, Williams settled in to a rhythm behind his jab and out-boxed his opponent behind double and triple jabs.

Heffron suffered a cut from an accidental head clash in the second round and his fortunes never looked like improving. As the bout progressed, Williams closed the distance to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Heffron. Williams pushed his opponent back and kept him retreating, it was evident that the Mancunian wouldn’t be able to turn the tide and his corner called the doctor over to end the fight before the seventh round.

As winner of the fight, which doubled as a British title eliminator, will have to face the winner of the Scottish civil war between John Thain and Kris Carslaw in a final eliminator.

Current British champion, Liverpool’s Liam Smith retained his title on last night’s show with a sixth round stoppage of Jason Welborn.

On the same show, North Wales’ Mark Evans (9-3-1, 1KO) dropped Adrian Gonzalez (10-1, 2KO) in the opening round but he was down himself three times in the third round and stopped by referee Mark Lyson.
