Nathan Thorley ‘thunders’ Jermaine Asare to win Welsh title

By Dewi Powell: Nathan Thorley (9-0, 5KO) needed less than two rounds to become the new Welsh light-heavyweight champion.

Cardiff’s ‘Thunder’ struck with his trademark right hand, which landed high on the temple of Jermaine Asare (8-3, 2KO) and dropped him to the canvas.

The Pontypridd native rose to his feet, though was correctly not allowed to continue by referee Reece Carter at the Rhydycar Leisure Centre in Merthyr Tydfil.

It prompted wild celebrations from Thorley and his team, which includes one-time Commonwealth title challenger Chris ‘Monkey’ Davies as head trainer.

Asare enjoyed a decent opening round, managing to rush Thorley when he neared the ropes, especially with body shots. However, Thorley’s decision to take his time and ease in to the contest proved to be right.

Nathan ThorleyInterestingly, both Asare and Thorley have won Commonwealth Games bronze medals, at the 2010 and 2014 events respectively.

Although in different teams, the pair also share a training facility at the First Choice Fitness gym in Pontyclun, Rhondda.
