Buckland to box fellow unbeaten prospect

Cardiff’s Mitch Buckland (8-0, 1KO) will look to extend his winning run against another undefeated boxer on Saturday.

The 22-year-old southpaw faces Scotland’s Ally Black (5-0, 2KO) at the O2 Academy in Bournemouth on a show promoted by Gregg Steene.

Buckland, who won the Celtic lightweight belt with a Unanimous Decision win over Craig Woodruff in 2013, now competes in the light-welterweight division and he’s targeting another title fight in the near future.

The prospect spends most of his time training with Tony Borg at St Joseph’s Boxing Club in Newport, alongside the likes of newly crowned IBF world featherweight champion Lee Selby and his older brother Gary Buckland, a former British champion. However, the younger Buckland has also prepared for his next fight in Spain, sparring Team GB’s 2012 Olympic Games captain Tom Stalker at Macklin’s Gym Marbella [MGM].

On the same show, Pontyberem’s Zack Davies (3-0) was due to fight for the fourth time in just four months.

However, the 23-year-old’s manager Gary Lockett has informed BoxingWales.com that his charge has been forced to withdraw after suffering a slight knuckle injury during last month’s six round points victory over Nottingham’s Jack McCormack.

Wales’ 2014 Commonwealth Games light-welterweight representative has signed with established promoter Frank Warren but he’s being kept busy in between appearances on the Hall of Fame entrant’s shows with outings on the small hall scene. Image by Hatton Boxing.
