Jason ‘The Power’ Cook (29-5-1, 15KO) says he can’t have any complaints so far in the final training camp of his career. In two weeks time, the popular 38-year-old will fight for the final time on February 1st on Matchroom Sports’ Reloaded show at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena in a Welsh title fight against the all action Tony Pace (4-6-1) and many are predicting it to be the best of the night. Cook said, “It’s gone absolutely brilliant, I couldn’t have asked for better. It’s been brilliant from the start. I was doing two sessions a day but I’m off work now. I’ve been off work since New Year’s Eve and I’ve been doing three sessions a day. Now and again, I’m getting some nice relaxation in the steamer and jacuizzi too. “Training over Christmas was easy, I’m not a baby anymore, I’m an old man now and I know what sacrifices boxers have to make. I still squeezed a Christmas dinner in because the weight is fine but the drinking and chocolates haven’t been a worry for me whatsoever.” Ex-WBA world champion Gavin Rees, a former opponent of Cook, also fights on the same show and the pair have prepared for their Welsh derbies by sharing some rounds sparring together. Cook said, “You know what you get with Gavin, he’s a great lad and he’s been there, seen it and done it. I’ve boxed the boy, I know how good he is and I couldn’t ask for any better sparring, y’know? It’s top quality stuff and I’m better for it. “We haven’t done too much sparring. At first, I was held back by work but since that, we’ve been doing our fair share and this week, we’re gunna rack up the sparring now. We’ve done a bit but we’ve got a lot more to do too.” With just two weeks until fight night, there’s still plenty of work for Cook to do with trainer Darren Wilson at the First Choice Fitness Gym in Llantrisant. He said, “The coming week is going to be another week of really hard work; cardio, sparring, pad work, everything really. In the last week, we slow down then and control the weight, make sure that’s alright and relax a little bit more before the fight night. “Weight has been great, it hasn’t been an issue at all. If it was nine’nine (135lbs) at lightweight like I was years ago then it would’ve been an issue but ten stone (140lbs) and light-welterweight is fine, I’m going to be fighting fit and strong at the weight too. I’ve given it my all for this fight.” With it being the last fight of Cook’s career that has included European and IBO title reigns, the Welshman has seen a huge response from the fans and it’s even surprised himself. He said, “Ticket sales are going well, I’m waiting for a new batch to come in. I think I’ve sold roughly between 500-550 so far. I said at the press conference that I’d do 700, I was only messing about really because I was hoping to sell 400 but I’ve exceeded what I expected to sell and the phone is still going.” Tickets for ‘Reloaded’ Selby v Munroe are on sale now priced at £30, £40, £60 ringside and £120 VIP are available from or by calling 02920 22 44 88.
