Daniel Barton drops and decisions ambitious Railton Neves

Newport’s popular puncher Daniel Barton (3-0-1, 2KO) continued his development in a bruiser with Portugal’s Yailton Neves (3-13, 1KO)

The St Joseph’s Boxing Club member earned a 40-36 decision victory on the undercard of Matchroom’s #JDNXTGEN show to delight an army of around 200 fans at the Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay.

The 28-year-old middleweight stalked with menace from the opening bell and a crisp right hand in the opening minute was a sign of things to come. When Neves showed his own ambition, Barton was smart enough to not hold his feet, skirting just out of range to safety and secure a solid opener for the prospect.

Barton timed a flush left hook early in the second round to send Neves to the floor, where he momentarily lay flat on his back. The visitor soon rose and keen to demonstrate he was okay, became more aggressive in response.

Recognising the threat, Barton stayed disciplined and controlled it with a series of sharp jabs and by the third round, he had regrouped to push Neves to the ropes.

To Neves’ credit, he adapted and had his own moments with a series of straight southpaw lefts, though it wasn’t enough to turn the tide against the Tony Borg trained prospect.
