Kennedy gets a late step up in class

Cardiff’s Craig ‘The Kid’ Kennedy (8-0, 5KO) has been calling for a step up in class all year and his wish has been granted, although it’s come out of nowhere. The 29-year-old, who is trained by former world champion Steve Robinson, had originally expected to face Bristol’s rough and tough Henry Smith (3-3) on Friday but he withdrew and a replacement contest has been hastily rearranged. Kennedy’s contest at the Merthyr Leisure Centre has been upgraded to an International Masters title fight and he will now face Bulgaria’s Konstantin Semerdjev (32-15-2, 19KO) on Sanigar Events’ ‘Repeat Or Revenge’ show. At 42 years old, the late notice import has seen better days but Semerdjev is still a significant step up in opposition compared to anything Kennedy has faced before. The Bulgarian has gone the full distance with world-class cruiserweights Krzystof Wlodarczyk and Giacobbe Fragomeni, albeit losing on points. In Semerdjev’s last fight, he won a ten round decision win over journeyman Mile Nikolic. Meanwhile, Kennedy shut-out Moses Matovu to win the British Masters Bronze title in March and has since been sparring former world champion Nathan Cleverly. £30 and £50 tickets for ‘Repeat Or Revenge’ on July 11th at the Merthyr Leisure Centre are available from Sanigar Events and Bristol Boxing Club on 01179496699. For more information, visit: It will be headlined by Dai Davies (10-23-2, 1KO) and Robbie Turley’s (13-4, 3KO) Welsh featherweight title rematch. In support will be Frankie Borg (8-2, 3KO), Adam Goldsmith (2-0-1) v Stuart Brewer (1-0), Tony Dixon (4-0, 1KO), Dorian Darch (7-3, 1KO), debutants Kyle Jones and Ricky Rowlands. The event will be broadcast live on Eurosport.
