This week, the European Boxing Union have installed Italian featherweight Davide Dieli (13-3, 5KO) as the mandatory challenger to European champion Lee Selby (18-1, 7KO). The 27-year-old from Barry added the vacant blue belt to his collection in February when he dominated and stopped former world title challenger Rendall Munroe in six rounds at Cardiff’s packed out Motorpoint Arena. Tonight, part-Welshman Ben Jack Davies (4-0-1, 1KO) will challenge for the vacant British Masters Bronze middleweight championship against the super-middleweight champion Kieron Gray (6-23-1, 1KO) over the eight round distance at the Metrodome in his hometown of Barnsley. Also in action in South Yorkshire this weekend, two time Welsh featherweight champion Dai Davies (9-23-2, 1KO) fights British Masters lightweight champion Andy Townsend (7-2, 4KO) over eight rounds at the Doncaster Dome tomorrow. Flintshire’s Andy Jones (1-0), who won Welsh super-heavyweight titles and a full ABA title as an amateur, contests his second professional bout against Lithuania’s Remigijus Ziausys (20-56-5, 10KO), who has only been stopped twice in 81 fights, in a four round bout. On the same show at Manchester’s Bowler’s Arena on Saturday, Llanelli’s Robert Studzinski (3-14, 2KO) fights Preston’s middleweight prospect Liam Conroy (5-1, 1KO) in a six round bout. Newport’s Sean McGoldrick (56KG) has returned home from Bulgaria victorious after annexing a gold medal at the Strandja Cup. The 22-year-old, who won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2010, beat opposition from Moldova, Italy and Russia before his Argentinian opponent withdrew from the final. Also, female teammate Ashley Brace (51KG) won a bronze medal. Amateur boxers will weigh-in for the Welsh Elite Championships this weekend and will contest their first bouts in the preliminary rounds next week. A Welsh team will travel to Scotland this weekend to compete in the GB Youth Championships. The team includes; Kane Shepperd (52KG), Sam Parry (56KG), Kieran Finnerty (60KG), Maeredud Thomas (64KG), Dino Smith (69KG), Sonny Lee (75KG), Sean Morris (81KG), Shaquiel Hussain (91KG) and Brandon Bull (91+KG).
