Rees’ (37-1-1, 18KO) promoter Eddie Hearn has been in talks with Abril (17-3-1, 8KO) since the Welshman defeated Liverpool’s Derry Mathews in Sheffield in July in a career best performance to retain the European title and claim his old British title.  However, the negotiations appear to have been hijacked with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions attempting to stage Abril’s next fight. The new plans would back track on a hint @Richard_Abril posted on the social networking site Twitter on July 27th. It said, “Looks like I’ll be fighting in September. And it also looks like I’ll be fighting in the uk . My opponent will be —– cant tell u yet ?G.R” If Abril carries through with plans to face Bogere (23-0, 15KO) then it would have to be in defence of his interim title. By WBA rules, for Abril to fight for the full title he would have to face the highest ranked and available opponent which in this case is Rees – currently ranked 3rd by the governing body.
