Welsh Elite Championships Prelims – Day One
The prelims of the Welsh Elite Championships got underway at the Gilfach Goch Leisure Centre this afternoon, with 11 fights entertaining a crowd that included former WBO world cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli. The most impressive performances of the afternoon came from Barry’s light-welterweight Alan Lamb, Gwent’s welterweight Sonny Lee and Port Talbot’s light-heavyweight Aaron Bird as the trio secured one sided stoppage victories to progress to the quarter-finals. The fight of the session came in the light-heavyweight division as Tylorstown’s Laurie Davies recovered from a monstrous first round knockdown, courtesy of a southpaw right hook from Splott’s sharp Pierre Lima, to battle back and win a Split Decision. Day One: 60KG – Billy Edwards (Dyffryn) beat Kyle Chapman (Llanrumney) via Unanimous Decision. 64KG – Tom Hearn (Llandudno) beat Jordon Bell (Maes G) via Unanimous Decision. 64 KG – Alan Lamb (Barry West End) beat Matthew Roberts (Llay), Referee Stops Contest in round three. 69KG: Sonny Lee (Gwent) beat Sion Roberts (Caernavon), Referee Stops Contest in round two. 69KG: Jozef Egan (Dyffryn) beat Ryan Thomas (Shotton) via Unanimous Decision. 81KG: Aaron Canning (Brymbo) beat Keven Jones via Split Decision. 64KG: Joe Jones (Arthur’s) beat Joshua Baker (Carmarthen) via Unanimous Decision. 64KG: David Stansfield (Chepstow) beat Jonathan Viscount (Colcot) via Unanimous Decision. 81KG: Denzil Goodridge (Afan Spartans) beat Deago Smith (Britton Ferry) via Unanimous Decision 81KG: Aaron Bird (Port Talbot) beat Nigel Brink (Arthur’s), Referee Stopped Contest in round two. 81KG: Laurie Davies (Tylorstown) beat Pierre Lima (Splott) via Split Decision.
