Tony Dixon destroys Mike Jones in 100 seconds to win Welsh title

By Dewi Powell: Mountain Ash’s Tony Dixon (9-1, 3KO) destroyed Wrexham’s Mike Jones (2-3) in 100 seconds to become the new Welsh champion.

The 24-year-old super-welterweight wasted no time in scoring three sickening knockdowns in the opening round to take the vacant belt at the Rhydycar Leisure Centre in Merthyr Tydfil.

Dixon, known as ‘The Welsh Terrier’, was by far the shorter competitor. However, he was spurred on by trainer Paul Paveldish and made Jones’ attributes redundant with a bullish approach.

The first breakthrough came when Dixon moved Jones to a neutral corner, burrowing to his body and rallying with short speedy shots. Jones was unable to escape and Dixon quickly found an opening to launch a thunderous overhand right over the top.

Jones was guilty of standing too tall and Dixon’s shot sent him sagging on the bottom rope. He was cleared to carry on but an identical attack sent him to the floor again moments later.

Referee Martin Williams took a closer look and would’ve been justified in halting the scheduled 10 rounder there but proceedings continued… albeit briefly.

Dixon steamed in and a follow up attack, which ended on a left hook, put Jones face down on the floor and abruptly finished the headliner for the Sanigar Events show.

The Welsh super-welterweight title was last held by Ferndale’s Barrie Jones. The southpaw, who hasn’t fought for 15 months, wasn’t aware he was no longer champion until he read BoxingWales’ preview of yesterday’s headliner.

Jones intends to return to the ring soon having overcome recent injuries and he would be open to facing Dixon if an offer was made to the 32-year-old.

The main event will be showcased on the debut ‘Y Ffeit’ programme on terrestrial channel S4C on Wednesday 29 March at 9:30pm. It will be supported with highlights from the rest of the show.
